Antenna Recommendations

We have had good experiences with "bow-tie" style antennas designed to receive UHF TV. Common models include the U4000 by AntennaCraft or the CM-4221HD Ultratenna by Channel Master.

Your antenna should be "in the open" without any large structures or other obstacles to block its "view" of the translator facility on the hillside near Wolf Creek. If your antenna is inside your home's attic, consider moving it outside, especially if you have a metal roof. A metal roof can greatly impair the antenna's ability to receive Digital TV.

Avoid splitting the feed from the antenna into too many separate outlets. Each "split" can reduce the signal strength at the receiver. If outlets aren't being used, it is best not to split off the antenna feed to those outlets. You may still receive sufficient signal strength by using a signal amplifier.

Remember that your Digital TV receiver must be "programmed" to receive the channels offered in Ogden Valley. Because the channels are "translated" here, they are received on different frequencies from the channels received over-the-air in Salt Lake City or Ogden. Digital TV receivers all have a "scan for channels" or similar function which must be performed on initial set-up. The receiver will automatically recognize which channels are available and label them accordingly as Channel 2.1, 2.2, 4.1, etc. If you have trouble receiving all 23 channels available in Ogden Valley, consider "fine-tuning" your antenna's aim and scanning again. Many Digital TV receivers even offer a signal strength meter to assist you in optimizing your antenna during set-up.

It is important to note that proper antenna set-up will take more time and effort with Digital TV than it did with analog TV. Don't expect to take 3 or 4 minutes and be done. You may have to block out half an hour or more. However, once your antenna is properly mounted, aimed and locked in position, your reception should remain strong without additional effort.
